Better

Here we are, the New Year! Phew! I feel overwhelmed with what I want from the new year, but strive to remember what matters isn’t what I accomplish, it’s who I become. Perfection will never be reached on this terra and improvement will be like riding the rocky mountains in a dune buggy without suspension.

What is most important is staying awake. Not literally, goodness knows we are sleep deprived enough as a culture. What I mean is awake to the world, ourselves, those around us, and the goals we set. It doesn’t matter if we always meet them, because we won’t. What matters is that we remember them and make little daily choices to move toward them.

This morning, will I spend fifteen minutes on youtube or get my day going with uplifting music and a clear mind? Will I call my mom or watch another episode of whatever? Will I scroll or read a good book? Will I eat a brownie or a smoothie? Life comes down to moments, and I want to be awake for every minute of mine. I want to take the time to look into my husband’s eyes when I talk to him and take time to breathe together without distractions.

Life is a whirlwind of go, Go, GO! But we have the power to sit and stare out the window for five minutes. We really do. And if we do, I believe a more peaceful, purposeful life will result. Here’s to the New Year, giving it our best, and having grace for when we fall.

Psalm 63:7-8 for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings, I will sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

Psalm 118:13-14 I was pushed hard so that I was falling, but the LORD helped me. The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.

Proverbs 24:16 for though a righteous man falls seven times, he will rise again, but the wicked stumble into calamity.

If you could do with a wake-up call in this arena (obviously read the Bible), but also pick up Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. I love it. It scares the pants off me and reminds me to open my eyes, step away from the flash and shine, think, and live.
